Website Navigation

Navigation Design

The best type of navigation for any type of website is a vertical one since this type is most likely to get click through to other pages.
Mobile Nav
The action tab for the mobile version of the navigation should NOT be at the top of the page! Insert it in the bottom half to make it easy for mobile device users to open/close with a thumb.
Follow the link below to check out an up to date navigation suitable for all device types …

Directories

Never be tempted to use a horizontal navigation with dropdown directory menus. This type of menu may be used by the majority of the websites around but it was developed long before mobile devices were available It has no place in modern web design.
Over 60% of the visitors to most website are using touch devices so the navigation must be designed to be thumb driven.
Using a directory navigation with images of products or services will get visitors to click through to the information they are looking for.
Use breadcrumbs to let visitors know where they are in the site and how to get back to a section/directory navigation page or the home/landing page.

Breadcrumbs

Large sites need a breadcrumbs navigation to let visitors know where they are and how to get back to a directory or section menu or the home page.
The breadcrumbs widget below the hero item hasan option to add a name, home, section and directory links and show the current page name.
The min width control adjusts the layout.
Sticky Position
When viewed on computers and tablets the breadcrumbs can be positioned further down the page and be made to scroll on stick at a preset distance from the top.
The menu becomes relatively positioned on phones so that it doesn't take up space and the links are stacked vertically.
