Navigation

Responsive Navigation

A successful website needs the best possible navigation to encourage visitors to click through to other pages …

  • Avoid using horizontal navigation
  • A vertical navigation upfront in the center is the best option
  • A horizontal navigation with drop downs for directories has proved to be ineffective
  • Use a separate section navigation on large sites
  • The action tab for the mobile navigation must be fixed at least half way down the screen.
  • Use an animated action tab the indicates the open and closed states
  • Use a navigation that indicates the current page
  • Make sure the link tabs are large enough to comply with Google's criteria

Contact

A web page must show the contact info in view immediately on page load. If it doesn't show this info upfront visitors will mistrust the site.
If the goal of the website is to encourage visitors to interact the contact info must be easy to find and use - not hidden away in a footer or a "Contact" page.
Contact forms should be avoided and never use reCaptcha. If you must have it use reCAPTCHA v3.
Replace the contact form with easy to find spam protected email action tabs.

Cookie Warning

The most irritating items to have on any web page are popup items, Google Ads and the GDPR cookie warning required by the EU.
All of the available EverWeb widgets that insert a cookie warning don't comply with the new rules since the visitor must now be given the opportunity to modify the information recorded.
If your website doesn't have cookies or you don't know what a cookie is or does then you probably don't need a warning notice.
Google Analytics
Most small websites don't need a warning unless they use Google analytics. If you are not using the generated stats regularly to refine and target a specific group of potential visitors then get rid of it.
If you simply need stats about the number of visitors and page hits these should be provided by your hosting service. If they don't ,ask them or change to better hosting.

Footer

Most websites have a large footer on every page packed with hard to find and read info.
A footer has no place on a responsive page that will be viewed on moile phones.

  • Replace the footer with a show/hide contact bar at the bottom of the page
  • Replace all the footer info with a link to an "Info" page
  • Contact info must be immediately in view on page load and at the bottom of the page.
  • Responsive web pages MUST have a back to the top function
  • Get rid of the footer and create a faster loading page and a better visitor experience
